Ours is an age of great possibilities that generate both opportunities and
challenges.  Some of these challenges, however, are now approaching the level
of crisis.  The daily news constantly reminds us of war in the Middle East.  We
see news clips that portray genocide and violence, as groups seek to secure
human rights and even basic needs.  In our own country there are cultural
divisions in which civil, political discourse all but disappears.  Everywhere,
people have disregarded the limitedness of our physical environment.

Human reason will be able to address these crises, at least to begin
understanding them.  We believe that crises that have been caused by humans
can be resolved by humans.  An expansive sense of ‘reason’, though, is
needed:  limiting reason to what is scientifically verifiable will not help.
Empiricism is necessary for the work at hand but it has never proved itself to be
sufficient.

Once again, and still, REALIA looks to its goal of putting philosophy in service to
humanity in this time of global crises.  The 48th Annual Conference will be
devoted to the theme Philosophy and Global Crises.  We welcome the
submission of papers, from any discipline, that address this theme.

Possibilities to be explored may include:
                         Environmental wisdom
                         The optimism of science
                         War and peace
                         Faith and Belief
                         Faith in Humanity
                         The Work of Ethics
                         A Role for Religion

Deadline for submissions is May 10, 2008.  Papers must be sent as
completed MS Word documents attached to email
to this year’s conference
moderator.  Notification of acceptance will be sent via email by mid-June.
Papers should include author’s name, affiliation, address, and email address.
Session presentations will be limited to thirty minutes, allowing another thirty
minutes for discussion and questions.
